D’Aversa: “Harsh result, shame for the fans and the club”
Roberto D’Aversa insisted the final scoreline didn’t tell the full story after Sampdoria were beaten 4-0 at home by Napoli on Thursday night.
“It’s a shame about the performance, because in the first half we were better in terms of our possession and shots,” he said. “When you give so many chances away to such a good team, it becomes difficult. During our best spell we had a double chance, when [David] Ospina did very well. The game went a certain way after that. The result doesn’t reflect the game. It’s a shame for the fans and for the club.”
D’Aversa admitted that his team need to do more to make their chances pay.
“We didn’t take the chances we had,” he said. “When you then go and try everything to go out and get a goal, the risk is that you give something away and when you’re playing a team with so much quality, they’re going to punish you. That’s what happened today. As I’ve said before, the fact that we matched them in the first half shows that we need to be more clinical in front of goal. Sunday will be our third game in a week, so we’ll need to think about the line-up. We need to recover ahead of Juventus.”
