EURO 2020: Damsgaard set to face Jankto in the quarter-finals

Here’s how the final three Sampdoria representatives got on in the round of 16 at EURO 2020.

Denmark. Mikkel Damsgaard played a key role in Denmark’s 4-0 demolition of Wales in Amsterdam, setting up Kasper Dolberg to open the scoring in the 27th minute. The forward doubled the Danes’ lead soon after the interval before Joakim Maehle (88) and Martin Braithwaite (90+4) added some gloss to the scoreline in the closing stages. The Samp midfielder started the game and remained on the pitch until he was replaced by Christian Norgaard on the hour. A quarter-final clash with team-mate Jakub Jankto awaits on Saturday.

Czech Republic. Jankto and the Czech Republic served up one of the surprise results of the round, with a stunning 2-0 win over the Netherlands in Budapest. Tomas Holes headed the Czechs into the lead in the 68th minute before former Samp forward Patrik Schick sealed the team’s place in the quarter-finals with a cool finish with ten minutes left on the clock. Jankto started the game on the bench, but was brought on in place of Lukas Masopust a minute before the second goal, and helped extinguish any hopes the Dutch had of staging a comeback, having been reduced to ten men in the 55th minute after Matthijs de Ligt was sent off.

Sweden. Albin Ekdal’s Sweden were on the wrong end of an injury-time winner at the end of extra time against Ukraine in Glasgow. The Samp midfielder played the full 120 minutes and performed admirably throughout. Oleksandr Zinchenko opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a fine volley, but Emil Forsberg drew the Swedes level just a couple of minutes before the break. Janne Andersson’s charges were the latest team to have to contend with being a man light after Marcus Danielson was given his marching orders in the 98th minute. The clock read 120+1 when Artem Dovbyk popped up to head Ukraine into the quarter-finals, where Andriy Shevchenko’s side will meet England in Rome.
