Sweden’s Ekdal: “Nothing wrong with dreaming!”

Albin Ekdal has over half a century of Sweden caps and has previously played at the European Championship and the World Cup. Yet when he talks about his national team, you could be forgiven for thinking he’s only just received his first call-up.

“Playing for Sweden is amazing,” says the midfielder proudly, speaking ahead of the big EURO 2020 kick-off. “Being one of the few players that can wear the yellow jersey means I’ve done something special during my career. It’s going to be fantastic to play at the European Championship and I can’t wait. Sadly, we’ve had to get used to playing in empty stadiums but I hope to see lots of fans in the stands.”

Albin also spoke positively about Sweden’s chances at the continental tournament.

“Taking part in the qualifiers is one thing but once you get to the Euros or the World Cup you have to up your game: there are three matches and you need to give everything you’ve got to win and go as far as possible.

“We’re been grouped with Spain once again after playing them in qualifying, then we’ll face Slovakia and Poland. It’s a tough draw but we’re a very good team and we can beat anyone on our day.

“There’s nothing wrong with dreaming. We know we’re not the best but the team with the most talent doesn’t always win; it’s the team that wants it the most. We’re ready and we can’t wait to start.”
