Giampaolo praises Samp character, calls for fan support against Chievo

Saturday’s win away at Empoli was Marco Giampaolo’s 35th in Serie A and it was one earned by a side that is growing in confidence. Speaking after the match, the boss praised the character shown by his players.

“Empoli closed us down well and looked to break. We did well to stay patient. We can improve but we always had control of this game.

“It’s too early to look at the league table. It’s only by staying consistent that we can climb up the league. Our job is to do our best,” he added.

Ahead of the match against Chievo, Giampaolo called on the home support to give his side an extra boost during this hectic Christmas period.

“We’ve got an important game on Saint Stephen’s Day. We need everyone at the stadium – they can make the difference.”

Meanwhile when asked to describe forward Fabio Quagliarella, who scored his tenth goal of the season, the coach said: “It’s difficult… you can’t sum him up in one word.

“I think his secret is maturity. He knows what he needs to do, thanks to the experience he’s accumulated over the years. Plus, he’s in great physical shape. But I should add that all my forwards are very good players and should be considered potential starters.”
