Torreira suffers World Cup heartbreak as Uruguay are beaten by France

Lucas Torreira’s World Cup adventure ended on Friday as France defeated Uruguay 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

The Samp midfielder played the full 90 minutes in Novgorod but was unable to help Oscar Tabarez’s side find a goal against the Euro 2016 runners-up.

Raphael Varane’s header (40) and a long-range Antoine Griezmann effort (61) fumbled into the net by Fernando Muslera saw Didier Deschamps’ men advance to the semi-finals, where they will face Belgium or Brazil.
