Torreira leads Uruguay to top of Group A: Russia beaten
You never forget your first time. Lucas Torreira made his debut from the first minute in the match which saw Uruguay crowned winners of Group A, ahead of the tournament hosts, Russia. La Celeste refused to be cowed at the Samara Arena, making use of their quality and experience to see off the Russians.
Oscar Tabarez’ men led from early on, thanks to a free-kick from Suarez on ten minutes. Ten minutes after that they doubled their lead, as Cervsev’s unfortunate deflection put the ball past his own keeper, Akinfeev, beaten for the second time. Smolnikov’s second yellow of the match put the Russians down to ten men, worsening an already bleak situation, and the third finally arrived on the 89th minute, Cavani sealing the win and the group for the South Americans. Now all that’s left to do is wait and see who they will face in the round of 16, where Uruguay will play the second placed team from Group B: Spain, Portugal, Iran or Morocco.
