Giampaolo previews derby clash: “It’s the biggest match for the fans”
Marco Giampaolo has insisted that his Sampdoria squad are well aware that the derby is the most important match of the season for the Doria fans – and will be doing everything they can do give the supporters something to shout about.
“The derby is the biggest match for the fans – it’s a family affair and has to be tackled as such,” he said, speaking ahead of Derby della Lanterna No.116. “We were a ‘dead’ team until five days ago. We were dead a week ago so let’s say we’re the underdogs.
“Genoa are a solid side who concede very few goals. They’re always in the game. It’s going to be a physical match too and Genoa are in good shape. I’ve always said that I have great respect for Ballardini’s side.”
It’s a big game in terms of the league table too, as Samp look to snatch a Europa League place.
“The results we’ve achieved have created really high expectations, but let’s not forget where we started from,” he said. ” We’ve been up there for many months and our aim is to stay there until the end of the season. We want to achieve what would be a truly extraordinary result.”
Samp are the home side on Saturday, something that gives the Blucerchiati added motivation to get the win, according to the coach.
“We’ll have more fans in the stands and the fact that we’re up there challenging for something big is partly down to the fans, who have always supported us,” he said. “Our fans can make the difference and I’m sure they’ll be a big help tomorrow.”
