Giampaolo rues bad luck in Fiorentina defeat
The Coppa Italia loss to Fiorentina was a tough one to take for Marco Giampaolo, both because of the manner of the defeat as well as aspects of his team’s display.
Following the match, the Sampdoria boss said: “I wasn’t happy with our first half performance because of the lack of intensity. We got back to 1-1 without really deserving it.”
He added: “We did really well in the second half, but lacked a little bit of luck in a few situations. I’m thinking of when we hit the woodwork.
“Ultimately, we’ve lost because of a few things that went in Fiorentina’s favour. I wasn’t happy with the referee.”
The cup defeat is Doria’s fourth match without a win, but Giampaolo views the game as a lesson to be learned.
“Tonight’s match underlines once again that we need every player at 100% – just as we were in the second half.
“It was within our capabilities to win. We could have easily got to extra time. We’ve conceded too many goals recently – we need to improve.”
