Triumphant Puggioni: “Unbelievable debut, let’s kick on from here”
The term “fairy-tale debut” is a common sight in football parlance, yet never has it been more apt than in the case of Christian Puggioni.
The veteran goalkeeper realised on dream on Saturday evening, making his debut for Sampdoria – his hometown club – in the most important game of them all: the Derby della Lanterna.
What followed was the stuff of sporting legend as the veteran goalie produced save after save to help Sampdoria secure a famous, vital win over their sworn rivals.
“It had been a long time since I’d played and it’s happened in the biggest match around,” said Puggioni after the final whistle. “There were some nerves there, but I tried to keep myself in check and work hard all week.”
Puggioni brought a roar from Marassi in the closing stages as he pulled off a stunning save in front of the Gradinata Sud, but the keeper was keen to remove himself from the limelight.
“I didn’t save it – everyone did. This victory backs up what the boss has been working on, it gives us a massive boost and will help us kick on from here. It was a key match and we’ve won it. It’s hard to put into words.”
