Just a point at Pescara. Ex-Samp man Campagnaro scores at both ends, Viviano saves from the spot
If only Gaston Brugman hadn’t been on the line to keep out Dennis Praet’s shot in added time, who knows how it would have finished. Or had Emiliano Viviano not outfoxed Gianluca Caprari from 12 yards. We’ll never know. Either way, it was a mixed bag of a performance from a Blucerchiati side without a win in two months.
Samp, showing just two changes from the draw at home to Palermo, had an old friend to thank for the opener, as Hugo Campagnaro put through his own net on 12 minutes from a Torreira set-piece. Viviano was alert to beat away efforts from Caprari and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, before the hosts’ pressure told. Campagnaro this time eluded Samp’s zonal marking system from Alberto Aquilani’s corner to head past Viviano – for once in no-man’s land.
With the scoreline level, the visitors received a real fillip moments before the break. Albano Bizzarri got himself in a mix-up and another former Blucerchiati man in the shape of Andrea Coda was dismissed for a hack on Ante Budimir – the defender had earlier been booked by Mr Celi for a foul on Ricky Alvarez.
Despite playing the entire second half with a man advantage, Sampdoria were frustrated time and again by a resolute Biancazzurri backline. The hosts could even have taken the lead in the second period but Viviano guessed right to save Caprari’s penalty after Jacopo Sala had felled Bahebeck.
Lucas Torreira went closest to winning it for Doria late on but his shot caught the top of the bar. Still no end to the winless sequence. We go again in a week’s time.
