Muriel: “We deserved more after the goal and our performance”

Luis Muriel believes Sampdoria deserved at least a point from their match at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, especially after his wonderful volleyed effort in the first half.

“It was a great goal,” said the striker after the game, “but I had to ask to come off later on. I was suffering from jet lag and the fact that I’d had to play two matches in 40°C heat didn’t help. I felt really tired.”

Muriel admitted that the extended half-time interval had affected Doria.

“The long break didn’t help us. He definitely affected us more than them. They had lots of chances in the second half, but we had just as many in the first 45. A draw would have been a fair result.

“It hurts, but I’m sure we’ll bounce back. I wanted to stand up to the plate this year and I’ve done that again today.”
