Sampdoria make a virtual splash. Italian football joins the eSports revolution
U.C. Sampdoria have a made a statement in the world of video games, becoming the first Italian team to create their own eSports section. A few months on from the announcement, the club will join up with Italian champion Mattia Guarracino. President Massimo Ferrero really pushed for the signing and Guarracino will don the Blucerchiati colours immediately.
Sampdoria have also agreed a partnership with Esports Academy, a Rome-based company specialising in promoting the discipline.
The club are also working on a series of initiatives to boost the sport’s popularity. They are organising an open tournament in Genoa for egamers, publishing video tutorials with Mattia Guarracino on the club’s official accounts and creating an international competition involving the stars of some of Europe’s top clubs.
In the meantime, Lonewolf92 – to use the Blucerchiati star’s official alias – will represent Sampdoria in invitiational tournaments featuring clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Sporting and Legia Warsaw.
