Montella throws down Blucerchiati gauntlet: “Win the derby in Samp’s style”
Brute strength, aggression and a fantastic engine on one side, possession, quality in abundance and structure on the other.
You don’t need to be a genius to figure out where Vincenzo Montella stands after defending Sampdoria’s values in his press conference ahead of the Derby della Lanterna on Sunday afternoon.
“History tells you that Sampdoria have always tried to play attractive football with quality footballers, at least in the last 50 years in this city,” the Aeroplanino declared. “Genoa have an identity born out of the fact that Genoa players are historically very aggressive and physically well-built. I think it’s fair to say that Samp have been more successful.”
The latest chapter in the war of two worlds looks set to be unleashed. “We want to win this derby because it would set a new record as we haven’t won two derbies in the same Serie A season since the early 1960s. We also want to gift victory to the fans and avoid an uncomfortable situation on the last day of the season.
“This match is like a final and we have prepared as such. We’ll wait until tomorrow to decide the line-up. All my players know perfectly well what this match represents.
“As for my future, the club and I have a very open relationship. We’re honest with each other and that will continue into next season.”
