Montella: “Greater competitive edge against Atalanta, we need to win”

“We mustn’t get too anxious about scoring or winning but we need a victory against Atalanta and the lads deserve one.” There are no doubts about what Vincenzo Montella is targeting from Sunday’s home game. His side need to secure three points to make a significant climb up the table.

“Plus, all the hard work we’ve put in over the last few weeks has to produce something concrete. We require belief that goes beyond the excellent attempts to play football we’ve seen in recent times. We’re not doing enough, we have to produce more,” said the coach.

“We misread some passages of play towards the end of both halves,” revealed a rueful Montella. “Otherwise, with another four points that we’ve deserved over the last few games, the table would have a very different complexion. Despite the fact we still concede too many, we have greater balance in the side now. We have lots of options and plenty of quality and we need to make the most of that. Atalanta have a clear identity, decent players and they’re good at hitting sides on the break. Sunday’s match will be awkward, just like every match is, and we’ll have to be very switched on for the full 95 minutes.”
