Samp denied by last-gasp Torino equaliser after Muriel and Soriano goals
Sampdoria were held to a 2-2 draw by Torino on Wednesday night after the visitors scored a last-minute equaliser at Marassi.
After a goalless first half, the match sprung into life on 66 minutes as Luis Muriel scored with a diving header. Torino hit back shortly afterwards, Belotti stabbing home from close range, and while it looked like Roberto Soriano had given Samp an important win with a lovely curling effort, Belotti popped up in the box to head home a late equaliser for the visitors.
Vincenzo Montella went with the same 3-4-2-1 formation was saw in the second half against Bologna. It was a quiet start to the match from Samp, with Torino’s Martinez and Acquah calling Viviano into action in the opening exchanges. Jacopo Sala’s second appearance for the club was cut short on the 25-minute mark, Modibo Diakite coming on for his debut in his stead.
It would prove to be short-lived as the Frenchman had to be replaced at half-time due to injury, Christodoulopoulos the man selected to come on for an important second half. After another cagey start, the contest – and with it Marassi – exploded into life on 66 minutes as Luis Muriel stole a march on Gaston Silva to dive in and head Samp in front.
The Doria faithful were sitting more comfortably with a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard, but nerves were sent jangling once more as Belotti made the most of Samp’s inability to clear a cross by stabbing Torino level.
Montella sent Fabio Quagliarella on in search of a fairytale return to the club, yet it was Roberto Soriano who had the crowd on its feet after he curled a sumptuous right-footed effort into the bottom corner for 2-1.
Four minutes of added time were signalled – but it proved to be too long for Samp to hold onto their lead as Belotti headed home a last-gasp equaliser and rob Montella’s men of a vital three points.
