Sampdoria beat Vojvodina 0-2 but slip out of Europe

A solid display with two goals and a clean sheet on the night ultimately proved to be in vain as Walter Zenga’s Sampdoria paid the price for their disastrous performance in the first leg of the 2015/16 Europa League third qualifying round.

Eder and Muriel set each other up either side of the break but at least four goals were needed in Novi Sad and Vojvodina held on to secure a sweet-tasting 2-0 defeat.

Meanwhile Samp were left to rue their shortcomings in Turin after a bright performance in the return leg showed them what might have been.

Doria exit the Europa League at the first corner but at least they have restored some pride. They also put an end to the club’s worst-ever European run (five games without a win).

It’s a case of ‘out but not down’ now as the Blucerchiati focus their attentions on Serie A, with the Coppa Italia to come later. Because one terrible night can’t destroy the dreams of a whole season. It’s a sad goodbye to Europe, but we hope to see you again next year.
